Lead Indian tacked Winchester 1873 44-40 SN 98170
attributed to Chief Gaul (Pixi, Gall), the rifle was purchased in the 1930's-1940's with several others from Chief Gall's family by early Colorado gun collector Audrey Thrailkill. Audrey opened the Thrailkill Gun Museum in Grand Junction in 1960. In 1961 The Gun Report wrote a story and interview with Audrey and wife Eva, who estimated 500-600 guns on display. Later when Audrey passed away many of the guns and all of his records were donated or acquired by the Museum of Western Colorado. Included with the rifle is 1987 letter from Museum of Western Colorado firearms curator Richard Schwan who researched the records indicating the "Chief Gaul" rifle was listed in Audrey's files as #WR-323 and 2 Winchester 1876 "Gaul's son-in-law" rifle 22, 676 was listed as #WR-315. The rifle is heavily decorated with over 100 brass and steel tacks, left and right side of rifle stock with empty crude round cutouts and flattened rings inlayed on both sides of wrist. Barrel has been cut down to 20" the mag tube shortened to about half length. All steel surfaces show a natural dark brown patina. The front sight is a later Lyman ivory bead replacement, the outline in the patina shows a blade front sight originally. This was probably lost, the later sight put in by Gary as there is no sign of deliberate aging or fakery. Mechanically functioning with very good action, bore dark with strong rifling. Included with rifle is the 1987 Museum of Western Colorado letter and copies of 1961 Gun Report on the Thrailkill Museum. Made in 1882. Antique. Est. 7500-15000
